The Egyptian Schools of Mystery?

Good call. But there is more to know.

For example the Hunab Ku explains the peculiar practice of placing tassels at the corners of a pavement rather than along the sides of carpet.
Yep, that's the one I was thinking of...but I am not sure as to its antiquity, it's been picked up as a new age thing, and I just had a quick look and do not understand its existence (or otherwise) in pre-christian and pre-European invasion South America,

It seems to be an ancient symbol (of the center of the galaxy) slightly modified by a Freemason in the first part of the 20th century. It is however, in its functionality, essentially the same as the original.

In modern Masonry we have replaced the symbol for the center of the galaxy with a symbol for the Blazing Star. Why?

Have we replaced he symbol for the centre of the galaxy with a symbol of the Blazing Star ? The Blazing Star contains a lot of symbolism, but the easiest one is the Sun..

There are many aspects of modern Masonic ritual that seem to be copied from Persian tradition in 3 streams: Sumerian, Mithraic and Sufi.

Seek and ye shall find. Material from every tradition they could find were included by the authors of modern ritual and those who brought symbols into our assemblies. I also see material from several of the ancient ways from Europe.

Since we're on the topic of mystery schools, the one I figure has the best support is one of the Greek ones considering all of our references to Pythagoras.

Do you think Pythagoras represents an individual or actually a school ?

They are the copycat from the greatest pyramid builder, I forgot his name, he was assigned to build the great pyramid. I also can claim I have the strength of David and the wisdom of Solomon and the charms of Joseph. I inherited it, I also have their knowledge. Will you believe my claim

Is not the sun in the heavens?

Is not the sun in the heavens?

Based on Egyptian teaching, yes, the Sun was the symbol of God, and No I'm not talking about the disk Sun. Heaven(s) can be a sneaky discussion because we then have to differ which heaven are we speaking of? Is it the heaven (Our Father was in)? But with Jacob he never got permission to go into heaven because he says "and the top of it reached to heaven" meaning at the door. but then again there is an environment in the heaven where Our Father resides meaning there is a Sun(physically and scientifically and biblically) so I would have to say yes and no.

Akhenaten's crazy ideas aside ( :D ), I've not read a Craft ritual which talks of Jacob's ladder leading to either the HeavenS nor the sun. To hit that conclusion, you'd need to be thinking outside Christian traditions ( which is fine) but I think James is drawing a long bow (long ladder? lol) on this one... generally, the Sun and the moon AND a bright representation of light are shown...

Is not Christian sects, muslim sects, and other religion sects consider crazy as well? In PHA we recite it as the candidate goes around, so there's where I think the connection comes in at. Lol, the Brother has some great responses no doubt about it though. And I agree with that.

Oh, we're all crazy :D but I used the phrase for Akhenaten because in Ancient Egyptian terms, he presided over a short lived heresy ( which no doubt survived him)

I wonder what you are reciting ?

The "Jacobs Ladder Song" in the African American version.

To be a bit more precise that light is referred to as the Blazing Star (in English Masonry) and often in Continental Masonry as the Flaming Star. http://luzoriente.blogspot.com.au/2009/03/flaming-star.html

The Greek word for glowing or scorching is Seirios, which is more familiar to us in the Latin form: Sirius. And Sirius oddly enough is the brightest star in the night sky.

The Egyptians based their calendar on the rising of Sirius - as do the Maori of New Zealand.

Also the Widow Isis was said to have come from Sirius.

I agree with some of that, but... in English Masonry that "bright morning star whose rising brings" tranquility I believe is not talking about Sirius and night but day, and the personal pronoun it not lost on me, but your interpretation does not work for me...

It is certainly an interesting statement. In planetary terms it refers to Venus and its relationship to Earth. (Why is it so important?)

But equally it might refer to the helical rising of Sirius (i.e. at dawn). That was the signal for the new year (Egyptians had several calendars) and the flooding of the Nile.

Sirius was particularly important as the origin of the Widow Isis who brought so much knowledge to Egypt.

OR more likely on the initial level, the Sun, on later salvation, either in religious terms or via knowledge and or confidence (in something) :)

The ladder to the Blazing Star, as portrayed, seems to require faith, hope and charity.

So why is the Sun off to one side?

Firsttrace.jpg

Note the platforms at the top of the columns. The platforms extend for an unknown distance into the clouds. What are the platforms?

There's normally 3-5 figures/symbols on the ladder, often with a specific number of rungs. ...

The sun to the side? Um, the moon as well. James, it all just leads back to a representation of "heaven" As Christians call it....

Platforms ? Not universal. You will also find three figures atop the pillars which are multilayered symbols, wisdom , strength, beauty, the three persons represented at East, South and West, three theological virtues etc etc.....

The "platforms" could be the entablature of the order. Many architectural drawings show the classic orders this way.
