The Council of Nicea

I recently became interested in doing some research regarding the Council of Nicea and was wondering what the Brothers on this forum thought about the topic. I also want to ask if anyone has done any research of their own and what books are out there that can shed some light on the subject.

From my limited browsing on the topic I suspect (but can not confirm) that the New Testament was put together in 325 AD at the Council and that many ancient books were excluded from the bible. I would like to know what books were excluded and why...who is man to exclude anything that could shine light and spread knowledge..what didn't they want us to know? I find this topic very interesting and would like to pursue it further with some actual research.....as if I weren't already busy enough with school and work but I think research for enlightenment is must more interesting and fun that research for a grade or for monetary gain!

Unfortunately, your limited browsing relies far too much on outright lies and evangelical propaganda. The 1st Council of Nicea was not concerned at all with fixing the Canon of Scripture.

Nicea Myths: Common Fables About the Council of Nicea and Constantine
Sabbath to Sunday: What Happened to the Sabbath Under Constantine

Unfortunately, it plays very well into the hands of the unscrupulous to promulgate so many lies about Nicea. The actual issues addressed at that council were as follows:

1. Arian heresy: The Son is not truly God, not co-eternal with the Father, but is a created being.
2. An agreed-upon "summary statement" of Christian beliefs, aka the "Nicene creed". Actually, the word "creed" was never used at Nicea, since Nicea happened in Greek. "Creed" is from the Latin "Credo" (I believe), which is translated from the Greek "pistevo" (I believe). Greek-speaking Christians usually refer to the "creed" as the "Symbol of the Faith".
3. Separation of Christian Pascha/Pesach/Passover (Easter) dating method from the method used for Jewish Pascha/Pesach/Passover. The word "Easter" didn't yet exist among Christians.
4. Dealing with the Meletians (an Arian schismatic group in Egypt).
5. Promulgating "canon law", which included forbidding self-castration as a gesture of piety and other matters of mainly clerical discipline.

Before you start demanding "truth", you need to make sure you are not steeped in lies.

Before you start demanding "truth", you need to make sure you are not steeped in lies.

Which is exactly why I wish to research the subject for myself and asked if anyone had any experience or knew of any good literature on the topic. As for my demanding truth, doesn't that mean that I need to be able to identify the lies? As I stated in my original post I suspect from what I have read online but can not confirm these suspicions, hence the need for research with actual books. Thanks a lot for the links and for the information you provided, it will certainly be a good start for my journey into the matter, and is much appreciated!

While looking at the gnostic gospels, pay close attention to why these books were excluded.
Compare both sides of the issue. As with many things "religous" conspiracy theories abound.

It seems logical that when the bible as we know it was created that "they" would not be able to include every sacred text
only what "they" believed the best would be included for a number of reasons I am sure least of all not to end up with a massive book or multi-volume set. Think of it in this manner, not that they where hiding any truth from us but that they where shining more light on what they thought was the most important part. "They" shared in what books they did use something that was far from common knowledge in those days which have driven men for generations to want to know more. Happy researching bro.
