Hey everyone I'm a male from the north east Uk. I would like to know more information about the Freemasons that's if you don't mind?
Where does the name 'Freemason' come from?
To be a Freemason do you have too know a Freemason? Im sorry if these simple questions offend you they aren't my intentions. I know you may think I'm a little young to be questioning you I'm 17 but though I'm young I want to learn as I've been interested in Freemasons for some years now. I Would just like to learn if you don't mind could you recommend some books I could buy on this matter? Thank you for your time.

Hi Liam,
The first problem that you're going to have is that you've chosen to join a Forum in America rather than one of the english ones that you could have picked and there are some differences about how Freemasonry works in different countries in the same way that the english language is used in the US compared to here in England.

Traditionally you had to have known a Freemason for some time before you could even start the process of asking to join that is because the Freemason will be your proposer and he get the grief if the Candidate is a berk. Nowadays with the Net, things have been arranged so that an interested person can be put in contact with a Lodge and its members will get to know him to see if they would accept him into membership and then he can start the process.

I would suggest joining an English Forum such as the one that I run (In my sig below) where you can ask question of Freemasons based in England with the added benefit of Scots and Irish Masons too.

Where does the name 'Freemason' come from?

There are several stories, all probably true to some extent.

The guild members could travel in foreign countries in an era when most were bound to the fields they worked because the skills of the guild made them too valuable to hold. Brick masons made structures with mortar while free masons made structures that interlocked to hold themselves together. Block masons made structures with squared bricks while free masons used their knowledge of geometry to make structures with freely shaped (in appearance while actually carefully balanced) stones. Mundane masons made walls while free masons made arches in walls and vaults in ceilings. As guild members free masons were literally free while mundane masons could be serfs.
