Perhaps a dumb question, but are the Freemasons doing anything special today to commemorate JM?

Why would we? He is an historic figure in one appendant body and one youth organization, but has no proven link to Freemasonry.
(And yes, I'm playing devil's advocate. Better to spend time discussing JdM than dealing with amateur drunks who have no concept of the meaning of a specific saint's feast day.)

The "actual" historic Monastic Order (Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and the Temple at Jerusalem) headed by de Molay has nothing to do with Freemasonry.

The appendant Order for Master Masons is just a "commemorative" Order there is no link.

There's a youth order named after him. It is likely that some of their chapters held events. Youth orders must have at least one Master Mason adult adviser present to be able to meet. Thus it is likely that some individual Freemasons did something special.

He's mentioned in some Scottish Rite degrees. The newsletter for my home valley had no mention of the anniversary.

Im a bit confused. I heard Masons say that they have become masonic knight templars after following the Scottish and or York rite. Here in the Netherlands, there is an Order of KT (www.tempelridders.nl), and one of the demands to be able to join is that you have to be a Master Mason. And also on English sites for example : http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20081109140640AAsDDvK, I hear the same thing.
I feel dizzy...

I might be oversimplifying it but our appendant and youth bodies are paying a compliment to those who *were* actual knights by naming themselves after that organization and in the case of our boys youth group, JDM.

Kind of like naming your son after a close friend. It does not mean your son is the product of your friend but you are paying a certain respect to your friend by naming your child after them.

Correct me if I am wrong here but that is how I understand our KT and JDM for boys.

I was always under the impression that we have a Masonic Templars because the originals shared similar tenants as masonry, Such as charity etc. There are some conspiracy theories involving a link from the Templars to the masons, but thus far there is no proof of the claims.
