I had the pleasure of visiting Fiat Lux Lodge No. 1717 in Washington DC on April 18, 2015. This is a lodge working under the Grand Lodge of DC FAAM in the Emulation Ritual. It seemed every member there was either British born or one generation removed.

It was an outstanding experience! Not only did I see Masonry I was familiar with but I was also lost and confused (in a good way) seeing Masonry in a way I hadn't before. The brethren were warm and welcoming. Also the meal which was served was outstanding. The lodge was tyled at 5:00 pm (meeting lasted a few hours) and I left sometime around 11:00 pm.

As a Mason from a grand jurisdiction that has nothing of the like within it I was floored a the diversity in ritual and lodge function GLDC allows. Again this was in a very good way. I would suggest every Mason who can to seek out a lodge which is different from yours and attend at least one meeting. See how Masonry is different and the same.

Emulation ritual is commonly practised in England and Wales. You can buy a ritual from Lewis Masonic, luckily, or I should have never learned it.

What is emulation ritual?
Back in 1813 two rival Grand Lodges in England joined together to form the United Grand Lodge of England.

As well as combining their Grand Lodge Officers, their buildings and their Lodges they also combined the Ceremonies and Lectures that they practised in those Lodges. First the two Grand Lodges each formed a Committee of their most practised ritualists who then met together and went through the approved workings of both Grand Lodges and fused them together. Then two specially formed Lodges (Reconciliation and Promolgation) taught the new combined versions to the Lodges but as with all oral traditions there were arguments over the accuracy of the work and finally several streams came out of it Stability, Emulation (of the Lodge of Reconciliation) and Sussex (after the first GM of UGLE). Today the Emulation variant is the most common form of our ceremonies worked in England and Wales and you can read the history of the Lodge here: http://emulationloi.org/history/ .
