I am informed that the Interstate at Temple is in a horrible state due to construction. Is there someone on site there that can advise if there is a good bypass? if coming up from SA, when doe it become bad? Would cutting over to Cameron from the Austin tollway be the thing to do?

I don't think the I-35 is all that bad if you have a bit of patience. Add an hour for construction traffic plus an hour for Austin commuter traffic.

Coming from San Antonio if you want to avoid traffic - Find a way to get to the TX-130 toll road. Ride it to the end then get on the I-35. This gets you around Austin commute traffic but not the construction. We did this from Austin area last weekend to attend a handicraft fair near Waco.

If you want to avoid both you'd need to be willing to go a longer distance. Around Ft Hood on the west or a bigger loop on the east. Perhaps TX-21 northeast to TX-6 north. More scenic but you won't gain time just stress your patience less.

Agree with Bro. Freyburger, I make the trip 2 - 3 times a year and I just try to time it between rush hours. I'm heading up Thursday afternoon from San Antonio and I don't see a way to really miss the rush hour this time, so bottle of water, CD's with tunes, and some quality "me" time.
