State residency requirements?

Well, no, the lodge members' willingness to vote for you is not all that counts. Aside from the obligation we take regarding obedience to our GL constitution, I am specifically aware of an AR Mason who was removed under this rule.

What I meant is some Jurisdictions are more lenient than others. Many believe a Felony conviction leads to an automatic black cube, yet it isn't 100% true. Once the candidate meets and gets to know the Brethren they may decide to vote him in. Not knowing how the constitution of that state is worded it could still be possible to be voted in. If my constitution barred bar owners I would see no reason to black cube a bar employee.

Bro Glen, do you think such a rule would survive a legal challenge on the basis of restraint of trade ?

I'm not qualified in Australia, but that wouldn't be a tenable argument in the US or England. Remember, we are a private association and already discriminate on the basis of sex and religious belief and, in the case of some US jurisdictions, sexual orientation and political beliefs. Those areas have traditionally received greater protection than one's trade

Thanks, interesting to hear your thoughts. I'm sure if you own a bar here we automatically give you conferred Grand Rank :)

Wow!!! You mean that if your family owns a legitimate business that serves alcohol that this is a Masonic offense?

In Arkansas, yes. I've seen one fellow denied membership because he was part of an advertising agency that did ads for a local beer distributor. Having your name on a liquor license, or even in your wife's name, has been grounds for expulsion.

Not sure we have a GLDC member here to answer that, but I'm guessing they have residency requirements as well.

I heard a Shrine appeal on just that issue.
