Sometimes I compare Freemasonry to a football team. Football teams practice in private, spectators are not allowed. BUT- On Sunday afternoon, the team is on the field in front of thousands of people, and broadcast on television to all the world. We learn in private, closed meetings, but what we have learned is then put on display for all the world to see.

Great analogy!

I guess it really just depends on how you quantify "secret". To me, a secret society is one that exists essentially without an office front or a PR presence. Many such societies exist of course, but from the amount of airtime Freemasonry gets (ofttimes irrelevant, more often outright scapegoating) it's pretty obvious that there's nothing secret about our existence as an Order. So I've often found it mystifying that this heading would be applied to the Craft, by anyone.

To me a person belonging to a secret society would not only deny being a member, they would deny the existence of the organization.

Yes, Death Dealer. I've been a Frazetta fan since grade school. There were two old horror magazines "Creepy" and "Eerie" that featured Frazetta's work and I Became a fan.

I suspect that this whole thing stems from well financed misinformation campaign(s) dating back a few centuries wherein the Masonic Order is characterized as a cabal intent on world domination.

Curiously, the group that published Humanum Genus, wherein the Craft was demonized, is well known to have been working in this very idealistic direction over a couple thousand years. The largest ritual magic organization on the planet.

Clearly the antagonism toward the Craft is a control issue. This is further corroborated by the fact that this same entity created it's own initiatic society based on the Masonic model, wherein it's members must swear fealty to a "sovereign". In short, an absolutely sectarian society with no idealistic similarity to the Craft. I'd say this is a control issue.

So as far as many folks are concerned, Masons are wizards who meet on Tuesday nights and discuss world domination strategies.

But even though this has everything to do with how the Masonic Order is perceived, it's way too large a topic for a venue like this. I was feeling chatty this evening.
