Eve Online - I like to shoot lasers in space

This has become one of my favorite images of Eve Online. What you see is several large ships (1000s of meters long) from very far away shooting each other. What you don't realize is that those ships represent several months of effort from large organizations that come together to build and deploy them.

What is Eve?

Eve is what you want to do. Some people, when asked, would say "Eve is a game where I can use capital to buy and sell, growing my empire and make more money." Another person would say, "Eve is a game where I can log in, load up my ship and fly around destroying other ships."

Overall, Eve is a sandbox game with very few rules. There are no "safezones" where artificial rules protect you. If you are outside of a station, you can be jumped and robbed just before the police show up. You can run a large corporation of many, many people from within the safety of a station. Again, you can do what you'd like to do. Build whatever sandcastle you'd like to in this sandbox.

Eve Online is all of these things, and none of them.

Hrm... Interesting. What are the official trailers from Eve?

Now, I realize nobody is probably thinking about that, but it's a good way to show off the trailers for the game. Here are 3, you'll want to watch these in high definition:

Trailer:

Trailer:

If you watch any of the videos, you want to watch these two:

So what do I need to play?

Well, you need a decent computer:

Minimum System Requirements:
OS: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7
CPU: Intel Pentium® or AMD @ 1,5 Ghz
RAM: XP (SP2) – 1 GB / Vista – 1.5 GB
HD space: 6gig Free Space
Network: 56k modem or better Internet connection
Video: 64 MB Shader Model 2.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce FX (5 series) class card or higher, ATi 9500, x300 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.

Recommended system configuration for running EVE Online:
OS: Windows® XP Service Pack 2 / Vista / 7
CPU: Intel Pentium® or AMD dual core @ 2 Ghz
RAM: 2 GB
HD space: 6gig Free Space
Network: ADSL connection or faster
Video: 256 MB Shader Model 3.0 Graphics cards such as GeForce 8 class card or higher, ATi 3000 series or higher and Similar chips from other manufacturers
Drivers: DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
DVD-ROM : 2 speed DVD reader or greater required.

Then you need an account:

PM me or make a post here and I'll send you a referal code. This is one way you help me out.

Then you make your character. Make whatever you want... whatever sounds good. It doesn't matter what you pick.

You need a mic and speakers at a minimum as well. We use voice communication all the time. It's the only way to coordinate what's going on.

You need a broadband connection.

So I'm in game... what now?

Post here so that I know who you are. Put your character name in the post.

Two things, in whichever order you want... or at the same time:

1. Finish the tutorials. It takes a long time to finish it, but do whatever tutorials you want. If you'd like to be a trader, go towards that. Do those missions/tutorials. If you'd like to be a fighter pilot, do those. Miner? Do those. Production? Again, do those.

2. Contact me in game: Adomorn Blacke, Enantium Blacke, and Fiat Sophia. On the left side of the game screen you'll see the menu... the third button is "People and Places." Go to that, search for the characters I listed above and add to contacts. Set me as "grey" and send me a notification so that I know to look for you.

Then right click my name and select "start conversation." If that doesn't work, it means I'm offline. If so, then send me a message (eve-mail). Let me know who you are and what you want to do. From there, I'll help you get started.

I've got questions!!

Ask them here.

I played eve for a few months. Very well put together. The problem is I already have a full time job. I did enjoy the premise.

I slipped through a few worm holes, mined some ore, etc but in the end I couldn't justify spending the monthly fee to play this game on nights and weekends. It requires a lot more time than just nights and weekends.

on another forum I frequent this was asked about eve online:

Can anyone comment on Eve coming from a top 100 wow raiding guild or high level arena? Basically someone who plays wow with a poopsocking kind of attitude and who enjoys that. In all the wow-eve comparisons I've read wow is usually described from a casual perspective.

I'm very happy with wow and I'm not sure wether I'd like Eve. I find the "objective" progression (raid progress/gear/arena ranking) in wow very cool and it seems there isn't really anything like that in Eve?

This was the best response:

Imagine you, proud majestic Human Warrior with your "Kingslayer" title, BiS gear, legendary weapon, retard sparkle horse riding majestically across the plains. Suddenly an orc rogue appears but no worry he is a lowly level 5, 75 levels below you. You scoff, when all of a sudden he saps you. You are stunned both literally and figuratively.

How is it possible that such a scrub can stop you?

Then as you recover, an undead appears, this one a L15 mage and with a wave of his hands you find you can't even target him.

"How can this be happening to me!" you exclaim, but you have no fear as they are doing 3 damage each not even marking your health.

Then 600 more turn up, none over level 20, pound on you until you fall beaten and broken, you die, they steal all your gear, give you a 3 week res sickness, steal your corpse, piss on it, post in trade how much you suck until everything you have ever worked for has gone, every dream shattered, and you are a broken and broke shadow of your former self wondering what the fuck just happened.

If you are really unlucky, the original level 5 Rogue also has an alt and has stolen all your guild bank.

Welcome to EVE.

it's happened to me in eve. I've lost a ship worth around 100 dollars in real life money.

you just log off and make sure you keep breathing.

that's really not the worst of it though... some alliances have lost 10s of 1000s of dollars worth of eve stuff in a single night.
