Masonic Temple of Detroit

The Detroit Temple building is one of those "Grand Masonic Edifices" that are, tragically, falling to the ravages of time, mismanagement, and rapidly declining membership (revenue). It appears to be extremely unlikely that any person or group with the resources required to save it will step up and do so. Maybe that's a good thing, in the long run, for Freemasonry. Maybe erecting such a thing was an act of hubris that had no hope of weathering even a century's worth of cultural change. But oh my, what it must have been like to be a part of it in that day.

Actually the Temple is doing alittle better these days. Mike Illtch owner of the Detroit red wings , Pistons and Little ceasars pizza has taken over as a business manager and it is starting to make money. It is a grand masonic building. Seven Lodge rooms a chapter, council room and a Cathedral chapel where Commandry meet. The shrine used to meet there in a shrine temple but they left. And scottish rite had a 4,000 seat aduitorium for there reunions in their. But they left aswell. The building would survive but the city of Detroit has changed and that has caused the people to move to the suburbs and leave town. And so they moved there memberships.

Holding to some things for sentimental purposes is not in line with Masonic teachings; especially when it is a burden. Be it financial or otherwise. I think even Masons here in Texas could do well to remember what a lodge really is...

At some point in our near future, lodges are going to have to start sharing buildings or demising just to save money. How long will we have to throw money into the pits that some of these lodge buildings turn into?
