I'm not a 1911 fan, but most of my handguns have night sights and a hogue grip. There are some square and compass grips for 1911s on eBay.

Like the sleek, not too narrow feel or grip of 1911's. Many of the modern semiautos have too wide a grip and feel cumbersome to me.
Have other semis but the 1911 is #1.

The 1911 is still around and still popular. That alone speaks to it's longevity and versatility.

If you like the way it shoots I wouldn't change a thing.

You did not say why you bought a 1911 but keep in mind that a 1911 is a "professional's" handgun. It take a thousand perfect presentations to develop muscle memory to manipulate that safety without conscious thought. It takes a lot of practice to maintain that level of proficiency.

BTW I've carried one for almost twenty years as a duty pistol.

I prefer my Colt Agent w/shroud, the best pocket revolver ever made.

I don't own a semi-auto, yet, but I will and when I do a 1911 will be the top of my list. Everything I have seen John Browning has made has been quality threw and threw.

Can't beat a revolver. Pull the trigger and it goes bang. I bought a ruger sp101 in 357 mag, and it is one of my favorites.

I own two 1911's. Both are Kimbers! They are great guns. Very accurate and reliable. I carry my ultra everywhere I go for my CHL. If you want a reliable accurate pistol, I highly recommend a Kimber.

True. You cannot carry a AR-15 for protection lol. I love the 1911. Such a reliable gun. I wouldn't mind a AR-15 but don't have the cash right now.

I too see the handgun as a defensive weapon. However, I don't see it as "only" a defensive weapon.

Certainly take the rifle or shotgun as the primary.
