I have to disagree with kyfreemason. I think a year is plenty of time. If a brother is serious about being a mason, then a year is ample time to learn the work. If something happens that doesn't allow the brother to get it done in that time, then a dispensation can be requested. I think if you make it longer, then people will take longer and lose interest causing them to drop out completely.

If I am understanding kyfreemason's suggestion correctly, I would have to agree with Humble Mason. I think that one year is plenty long enough. Should some sort of issue arise like a Brother has to leave town for work for long periods, getting a dispensation or allowing him to pick back up his work is easy enough.

As for members that are part of the military, as things are, it is pretty easy to assist with their situation as well. Those Brothers that are in the military and are deploying before they are able to get all their work done can get a dispensation that allows them to go through the second and third degrees without having to turn in their work for the first two degrees. They will, of course, have to turn in their MM work when they return from deployment, and usually within 90 days of getting back. Though, Army usually sends their guys on leave for a few weeks when they get home which the lodge wouldn't count as part of their 90 days.

I can see one or two ways that kyfreemason's post can be interpretted, so my response is more based off Humble Mason's reply.

....I could be mistaken, but I believe here in Tx an EA when he has run pass the 1 year time allotment must still turn in his work and be found proficient in that lesson.....then Petition for Advancement and be voted upon by several methods if a motion is made for one way or another. I think any number of years can have passed but for obvious reasons a secret ballot may be chozen by the lodge. I am the lodge councilor and qualify officers and new masons in the A.L.L. and L.I.F.E programs. We get on the phone periodically and call EA and FCs who have lapsed no matter how much time has transpired.....as it is never too late unless a felony has been committed.

From what I am understanding, that is how it goes as well with the EA and FCs. Also part of how they are not actually considered "full" members. I just heard of a Brother who did his EA twenty years ago and just for some reason lost interest in Masonry. Well, a a couple weeks ago, he was finally raised and got his MM.

They used this example during our L.I.F.E. Program class and few Brothers from my lodge went to see him get raised a couple weeks ago.

In light of Bro Blake's post concerning solicitations from Grand Lodge, maybe a resolution concerning the budget crisis would be in order. Any lawyers or CPA's amoung the grand west who would want to challenge the East?

From what I understand, they claim that the budget shortfall will be taken care of after this year when the per capita kicks in. I'll believe it when I see it.

Hasn't the deadline to turn in new resolutions expired? Also, thread moved to Jurisprudence...

You're correct.

Art. 172. Resolutions: Law Changes; Charter Petitions.

All Resolutions proposing any change in the Laws of this Grand Lodge, shall be filed with the Grand Secretary not later than May 15 of each year. (Revised 1998)
