"Am I an arse?" refers to someone's general personality. For instance, "I am generous" would refer to a personality aspect.

If you'd like to read more on the subject, I found David Stevenson's "The Origins of Freemasonry - Scotland's century 1590-1710" rather good. Although the Grand Lodge of Scotland was formed in 1736, so the book covers what led to that (and more).
