Published in 1723 in the “Book of Constitutions”, the “Ancient Charges”, or “Old Charges”, is a set of rules laid down by Dr. James Anderson and a Committee of the Grand Lodge for the conduct of Freemasons. These rules have been adopted by most Grand Lodges and are so important that most lodges are expected to read them, or a version of them, aloud each year. They are found in “The Laws of the Grand Lodge of Texas, A. F. & A. M.” with the following introduction:
