I am curious how an installation can be open to the public. My experience is it takes place in a Board of Installed Masters from which all but Installed Masters (ie Past Masters or serving Masters of other Lodges) are excluded and certain knowledge restricted to the Masters Chair is communicated to the incoming Master by his predecessor.

I am currently Master of Wheatsheaf Lodge No 9445 in the register of UGLE. This is my fourth time in the chair (not all this Lodge) and have installed a successor on three occasions.

The "open" part is the presentation of jewels and implements to all of the officers after which they are escorted to their respective stations and places. The ceremony you've mentioned is separate and as exclusive as you described.

Now I understand, however in UGLE workings (there are quite a few variations on the basic theme) the appointment and investment of the officers is always done by the new WM in the First Degree while the lodge is properly Tyled and before the Lodge business is conducted.

O.K., this clears it up for me. Thanks brother.

In many US jurisdictions the investment ceremony is not required to be in a tiled meeting. It can be done, and is encouraged to be done, open to the public.

That's the way it is here in Kentucky. There is a catered supper before the installation and members are encouraged to bring family members to both.
