I still favor it, but Reagan offers a good argument.

Blake,
This was produced against medicare in 1961. He also INVENTS provisions of the laws to prove his point.

If his arguments are good - was he right? He's had almost 50 years for his projections to come true.

Ronald Reagan: “f you don’t [stop Medicare] and I don’t do it, one of these days you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” [1961]

HMO's were also opposed as socialized medicine.

Calling something socialized doesn't make it socialized medicine or put our children at risk of slavery.

How many nations who have Universal Healthcare are no longer free after instituting it?
How many are no longer free after instituting medicare like programs?

There are more than 50 years of US history to have been able to prove him right and there seem to be at about 50 countries at least with "socialized medicine". Universal health care - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At this point, there is either evidence for or against his predictions because its been tried and tested many times over by others (50 years, 50 countries). How many are still free and how many rank above us in the Infant Mortality, Longevity and Human Development Index?

these possible "concessions" seem okay to me... coop healthcare? seems like a step back instead of forwards for government healthcare.

the HMO became what it is today with the rubber stamp of approval by congress... i'm a huge fan of CO-OPs.

Micheal Reagan and Ron Reagan have different opinions on their dad. If you ever get a chance, do a little reading on Micheal Reagan, pretty sure him and his dad were closer ideologically.

Also compared to where we were when Reagan first moved to the conservative aisle we have become much more of a socialist nation so you could use the argument that it does lead to socialism.

I'm sure ideologically - without a doubt.

But insight as to how he would have responded to the rancor today, I'm not sure if they would be different at all. But, I also disagree with how he viewed his father's hypothetical position on that.

Of course, that happened as soon as that bill passed and medicare came into existence.

He had very, very specific , very scary predictions - none of which came true. Even as he safeguarded the program during his presidency decades later.

The good news is if Oregon switches to what is being proposed nationally, it won't be the case any more. Then again, the same thing is happening for chronically ill people on private insurance. It's rationed according to wealth.

Bush (who I only mention because of his stance on Schiavo) signed a bill into place as governor that gave doctors authority to unplug someone when they see fit.

GOP ignores Texas right-to-die cases - War Room - Salon.com

That's a policy we can contact our representatives on locally.. But, it's going on 10 years here in Texas. In capitalized medicine.
