I was curious what units and clubs everyone is a member of, if you are. Also, what kind of events do you do that 1. benefit the hospital by raising money 2. public events (parades) and 3. is fun for the unit/club such as socials etc.

I'm in the Arab Patrol and we do the IHOP day, bucket brigade, parades and social events like BBQs, family socials, bowling etc.

I belong to Twin Lakes Shrine Club, of Mountain Home, Arkansas, which is under the joint jurisdiction of Sahara Center in Pine Bluff and Scimitar Center in Little Rock. For reasons long forgotten, we report to and are subject to Sahara. My Temple/Center is Scimitar but I had to join Sahara as an affiliate to be an officer in Legion of Honor of which I am also a member.

Your Shrine has a homebrewers club? That's an exciting variation to the usual ones.

Haha, not that I know of. It's a bunch of different brewers that share "sips" and recipes

I wondered. I think the OP was asking about Shrine clubs and units.

One of the best tastes of ale in my life was out of the trunk of some guy's car in the parking lot of a bar. I'd bought him a Guinness. He repaid with a hand crafted ale that was half way between a British bitter and a Belgian Trappist. Angels sang. Or belched I guess. He was that year's president of the "Maltose Falcons". Wonderful name for a home brewers club.

Some of my best batches have been variations on trying to achieve a blend of British bitter and Belgian ale based on that experience.

As I work in high tech I deliberately go low tech in my brewing so I don't get good enough duplication to share recipes in most cases. I measure ingredients by volume because it's lower tech but less accurate. I measure temperature by touching the outside of the kettle if it's cooling or the activity of the roll if its boiling. No hygrometer. So my batches are good but no two alike. Heck, I even use some bittering agent other than hops about one batch in 5. We only settled on hops as the primary bittering agent 4-5 centuries ago. It's the new fangled stuff. ;^)

Probably my next batch will be mead rather than ale. I've got the ingredients for a combination honey plus sorghum brew that I've done before.

I'm with you. I don't use a hydrometer or fancy gadgets unless thermometer counts as fancy. I figure what's the point, I'm gonna drink it anyways!

I started the "Voice of Aladdin" amateur radio club at Aladdin Shrine, Columbus OH. If your shrine center does not have a club that suits your needs, then start one.
