Lodge Break

Yes, my Lodge goes dark in the Summer (July and August), but it's not a requirement. There are a few Lodges in my jurisdiction that do not go dark, such as Parkland Lodge No. 299. So it's a common practice, but our Grand Lodge doesn't require it or even encourage it.

One of my jurisdictions has a rule that a lodge can go dark two stated meetings per year without dispensation but it doesn't say which two so the rule is not automatically about summer. Active lodges tend to not take any months off.

My other jurisdiction has the skipped meetings appear in the lodge's by-laws and there's a blank for it in the standard by-laws supplied by GL that most lodges adopt. Taking off other months requires dispensation. Active lodges tend not to take any months off.

Do jurisdictions in the US have a break period from lodge in the summer?

Texas, Art 228: Meetings: Frequency. Every Lodge shall meet at least once in three months. So I assume you could go 2 months without meeting however I don't know of a lodge in Texas that does.

Are there any lodges in TX or anywhere in NA that meet quarterly? I've asked around and so far the only friends I've met whose lodge meets quarterly have been some CoMasons (so I used the word friend instead of brother here) who lived out of country far from their lodge.

A quarterly stated meeting sounds like it means degrees aren't on a quarterly cycle.

Rocksprings meets quarterly. Sorry can't remember the lodge #.

There are a few more I can't think of right off.

There are some that do. And in general you'll see most conferred during called, not stated meetings.

I'm not a mason so I don't get it... why less meetings in Summer - I would have thought Winter is more difficult to attend? Are people going away on holidays or what is the reason? Just curious.

Kids are out of school and its vacation season. If you insist your officers be there every meeting, helps to give them a small time off for vacay. Just my guess.

We go dark in July and August. A good reason for that is that our very old building has no air conditioning in the second-floor Lodge room. It's usually stiflingly hot at our last June meeting. July and August would be unbearable.

Masonry is popular in urban areas where many are farmers. Farmers are busy in the summer. Also Masonry predates the industrial revolution so some of our traditions go back to a time when almost everyone lived in rural areas.

I was Passed about a week before my Lodge went dark for July and August. So I've gone from being at the Lodge 3-4 times a week to...just kinda waiting around.
