EA Masons visiting Scotland

I was on an investigating committee visit last night and the candidate asked me a question I thought I would post here.

He stated that he was going to Scotland at the end of September on vacation and asked if he was initiated prior to that, could he visit a lodge there as an EA.

I told him he would have to check with their Grand Lodge and probably the individual lodges he wanted to visit. I also told him he would have to have his dues card and know at least some of the work.

Does anyone know if he would be allowed to visit a lodge or have any insite if he were allow to visit?

I would recommend that he contact the Grand Secretary and go from there. Personally, I would tell him to await the time with patience.

If you have a look at the Topic called "Moving to England" it will help as it is pretty well the same up North. However as mentioned above it is Masonic protocol when travelling abroad to contact your own Grand Secretary for guidance first.

I think if your an EA and will visit to other lodge it will be the will and pleasure of the lodge WM, if that EA will be accepted. In our lodge Visiting EA is accepted only if the lodge is open to EA or only if it is in OPEn lodge.

Yeah, I attended a quarterly communication of the Grand Lodge of Scotland and had no idea what was going on half the time during the opening...lol! The brother who took me told me "don't worry about it; just do what you do."

Hi,

just call the Grand Secretary of your GL and ask him for a letter of good standing - just in case. But I would recommend to wait until you have earned a Master degree anyway. Most of the Scottish lodges are quite relaxed but in England they certainly will check passwords grips and signs of your degree and mostly they don't like EAs visiting except when they turn up accompanied by a MM.

Freemasonry in Scotland is widespread and most towns large or small have lodges. The meetings are advertised in local newspapers or you could find out info. in the Grand Lodge website. To attend a meeting you would have to take a test or have someone who can vouch for you. This is common and every visitor is required to do this when visiting a lodge for the first time.
