Hello,

When I first enter the grand lodge of ny, I was asked what drove me to seek entrance? Everytime, I meet someone new or someone who is interested in joining? I ask why? So what inspire you to join freemasonry? Father?grandfather? Fiancée father?etc

I am in a minority . I never gave Freemasonry a second thought before I asked for a petition . As a matter of fact , I had no idea what Freemasonry was and did not even know the building my mother lodge meets in was a Masonic lodge . How I became a Mason was , I noticed a ring on a friends hand , asked what it was , he told me about Masonry and how to join so I said "What the heck , give me a petition ! If anything it will get me out of the house a couple of nights a month ."

No great and/or deep purpose , no family ties , no earth shattering reasoning . Now , after many years of service I am a past just about everything including DDGM and as my wife states , completely ate up with Masonry .

I know this is not what some will think is the proper reasoning for becoming a Mason , but the why does not matter , IT IS what I did after I become a Mason that counts .

I was researching problems between religions and why they had problems. When I came across the Masons concept as in the USA freedom of religion but not freedom from religion. Some religions force obedience, some coerce and some invite but Masonry invites all that believe in something. I found Masonry is a way for men to have common ground without a dictatorial entity telling them what to do. (potentate) This is why I believe Masonry was so important the founding fathers of the USA.

I joined because I was looking for truth, and while I was looking I ran into a childhood friend that had been I,P&R who gave me a good impression of the brotherhood !

Freemasonry is weird this way. You join it for obvious reasons but you do not know the real reasons because you do not know what is on the other side of the inner door.

It's like saying you love the way a Porsche handles but you only sat in one in someone's driveway.

You can see the car, experience the inside of it but can never appreciate it until you sit behind the wheel and giver her a go.

I joined because of how the masons I knew interacted with family and how their kids and family interacted with them.

The rest of the experience comes after you join. It is kind of like 20/20 hindsight. You can't explain it until after you join but those feelings cant be put to words so you wind up with being told the former. It's up to every individual to experience why they joined once they receive light.

It may sound corny but that's my take.

I couldnt agree with you anymore...to add to your comment; a brother who doesn't teaches you something is such is just a "pin-wearer". I believe we have the capacity to teach one another something about the craft or anything other than the craft

I had been interested in Masonry for 15 years, but I had not been in a place in my life where I could devote the time. I was either too young and wild or, later on, in college and grad school. When I finished my academic work and returned home to put down roots, I knew it was time to join the fraternity.

I had researched Masonry and it's philosophy for many years. All of the great men whose work inspired me were Masons. Really, there's only so much you can get outside of the temple. I decided that I wanted to live life as a Mason and to really experience Masonry rather than looking in from the outside.

I noticed that there was a special bond amongst some co-workers and I began asking questions...I went into it blind (pre-internet) and have never regretted it

Thank you for your responses. I too share some of the same experience that were posted on this tread but it was mainly curiosity at first. No father no greatfather "connection". Coming from a culture that deems masonry as "satanic". It made me even more curious when I found out why freemasonry has existed for so many year, made me ask where to signed up. Granted as a young candidate, I was seem as unstable and needed more time to focus on my academics and economic stability. After taking the tour at the grand lodge and finding out, there is a lot of charity work to members and nonmembers. I wanted to be apart of all the charity and how I could contribute to the craft and the lodge while simultaneously further my studies and growing as man. Thank you for time, I hope to one day meet many of you or visit different jurisdiction. Best wishes
