No way the ancient masons were just primitive stonechoppers.
What do you guys think of this picture.

I wonder if this in reference to the Hiramic legend. IIRC though, the Hiramic legend doesn't surface in writing until, what, like the 1730s?

There is a Scottish Rite degree that tells how alchemists became involved in Freemasonry. It's supposed to be legendary. Often legends have historical roots. Hiramic legend could well have been in use in some groups before our historical brothers adopted it.

With a single engraving (I assume it is from a book or other reference) out of context, it is difficult to attempt to decipher meanings or allegories. Do you have more information about it besides a date?

That painting reminds me of "Raising the Master" by Il Guercino (Giovanni Barbieri) who lived 1591-1666. Historians say it is not about masonry, but there are many similarities.
