Your initiation is the very same that all Masons have been through and it's very eye opening and enjoyable. I hope that your enjoy the ritual as much as I did and let me assure you that there is nothing to fear.

Feel free to read any material you find about Masonic history or philosophy or famous Masons. Avoid anything that claims to tell what will happen in your degrees. The degrees have the most emotional impact when you go in cold. Put your trust in the friend who recommended and step out in faith to experience what we all have.

Thank you. I've already read Freemasons For Dummies. And avoided the chapter that Christopher Hodapp tells us to avoid until after completing the degrees lol. I can't wait to read it after I've been raised to MM. I'm looking into other books now. Are there any in particular that you think are a good read for a candidate?

Between initiation and being raised you will be doing memory work.

Concentrate on learning what the work means and not regurgitating it when you need to.

So avoid reading too much. Save the questions for your mentor. He will tell you what you need to know when you need to know it.

My personal opinion is to just wait. You have your entire life to study, but only one Initiation.

Thanks Trysquare and Brother_Steve, ya I'll hold off on the reading until my mentor instructs me to dive into the books then

Before initiation, Plato's Republic. Between initiation and delivering your MM proficiency focus on your proficiency work. After raising there are all sorts of books that could be suggested.

Why do I recommend The Republic? It's about the type of meanings to be found in Masonry. Read the Allegory of the Cave for not just the Theory of Forms but also how symbolism works in Masonry and the world at large. Read the descriptions of the classes of men using metals. It tells how to advance from one metal to the next so it's the type of personal alchemy taught by Masonry. The idea gives good context for many of the lessons to be found in Masonic teachings.

I received my first degree on the 18th, it was the most amazing thing in the world! I could not go to sleep when I got home. The support that was there for me was amazing!
