Well guys just as I was getting ready to leave for the lodge I got a call that the meeting tonight has been cancelled. I will now be inducted tomorrow night. After I get back I will let everyone know how it went.

First off, congratz. I am curious though, how does this work?

If a degree is cancelled it has to wait until the next business meeting unless you have dispensation from GL to open as an emergent communication. We are not allowed to open the lodge without dispensation period.

Unless your constitution is different than ours so if that is the case you may ignore everything I said minus the congratz!

Interesting rules variation in New Jersey.

In all three of my jurisdictions there is at least one meeting per month that is stated in the by-laws that every member signs. That's why they are called "stated" meetings. They are the only meetings where we can ballot on candidates or vote to spend money. It is allowed to do degree work in a stated meeting but not that many lodges decide to do that. Illinois also has an annual meeting for election of officers stated in the by-laws and it's on a different day than the monthly in some lodges.

There are also "special" or "called" meetings for other purposes. "Work" for degrees or proficiencies, "instruction" for formal practices like officer qualifications, you name it. As long as the WM can inform enough members have have a quorum the lodge can be opened for a degree. Most degrees I've been to over the years have been in a "special" or "called" meeting.

Cancelling one night and then calling the next does seem unusual to me. Many lodges work on a specific day of the week so the next opportunity would be a week later not a day later. The most active lodge I attend opens two evenings per week, every week, whew those guys are active.

A near by lodge was having an EA initiation the following night and I was inducted there. My guide was a member of my lodge.

Congrats brother. I know it seems like a lot coming at you all at once but when you see the ritual from the other side of the hoodwink it is a whole different experience. I have seen a dozen or so initiations and I still see something I never saw before or that peques my interest. You learn more from presenting the degree than being the candidate but that does not mean you should enjoy the night it is about you after all.
