WM Requirements

I'm not sure how up to date the above link is. But I know for Maryland the description has some things missing. What are you requirements to become WM in your jurisdiction? I'll be replying to this post to give Maryland's.

Serve as a Warden, Be "signed off" at District School on emulation of Opening & Closing in both ways, Business of the Lodge and EA Degree (all also needed to be elected JW), Actually confer an EA Degree, be signed off on emulation of FC Degree (Also required to be elected SW), confer FC degree, signed off on emulation of MM degree, and confer MM degree. Attendance at district schools and Leadership Courses is required of all elected officers.

Well, in our lodge at least, you would be hard pressed to not have the opportunity, especially since we have great relationships with other lodges in the district who would accommodate someone who had to do a degree. Our current JW did his EA degree conferral at our December Stated Meeting just before we voted on officers. When it needs to happen it can happen! I am guessing if thing work out the way that the WM, SW & JW plan, I will likely have to do the same.

Here when you become SD you must learn the WM part for the EA ritual. When you become JW you must learn the WM part for the FC ritual. When you become SW you must learn the WM part for the MM ritual. By the time you go to the east you must know the WM part for all three degrees.

Under GLoTX, the prospective WM must have served as a Warden & be voted proficient in the opening & closing ritual of the EA, FC, & MM Lodges (plus the Lodge of Sorrow) by the Brethren of his Lodge.

Only a few things
  1. Be a financial member of the lodge
  2. You can not con-currently serve as a WM in another lodge
  3. Have been a MM for not less than 5 years
  4. Have been installed in the office of Warden in any regular lodge (does not make a distinction between SW or JW)
  5. Get the vote of the lodge (generally a formality and unusual to see an election, the WME is normally just declared).

For Idaho:

You need to have served as a Warden (either JW or SW) first and attain a WM Certificate of Proficiency.

Warden Certificate of Proficiency:

Open & Close all 3-degrees
Test on Idaho Code & Digest
Preside over a Stated Communication​

WM Certificate of Proficiency:

WM in all 3-degrees (1st section)
All lectures
WM during raising​

One can get a secondary ticket for doing the G-lecture and one other lecture. The differences these certificates make is that only Past Masters with a full ticket are considered voting members of Grand Lodge.

Perhaps it's too focused on a large body of ritual in this particular case, but I would argue that being very familiar with the ritual you need to use on a constant basis - openings and closings for all degrees, for example - allows you to focus on the mission of running the meetings and conducting the Lodge business.

Stumbling through openings and closings is distracting at best. Knowing your 'stuff' very well while conducting this mechanical part of the meeting I find to be quite helpful.

Agreed. I have worked hard to learn these very things.

From my GL's Constitution, to be elected and installed Master you must have served 6 months as a Warden in any regular Lodge. That's pretty much it. There are restrictions for all elected officers - like not holding office in more than one Lodge at the same time. Interestingly enough, there are two exceptions to the rule about having served as a Warden - first, you can be Master of a newly formed Lodge without having been a Warden, and second - "If no such Warden can be found".

Individual Lodge bylaws may have additional restrictions imposed on officers.
