The History: I was raised in a rural lodge where being a Mason meant going to meetings and not much more. I was unsatisfied.
Today: I am extremely satisfied with my Masonic experience. However, I should say that it took years to find Brothers who were doing what James the Just calls “the work of the fellow craft” let alone the work of a MM. Actually, in my opinion, that work of the EA is almost entirely overlooked by most MM’s, but I digress.
Years ago I had an extremely liberating experience when I visited the House of the Temple in Washington D.C. which is the home of the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction. I stood in their library reading the book titles and was shocked to see the depth of their esoteric and occult collection. After that experience I began to understand Freemasonry in a new way. That day in the library I discovered that I could learn a great deal about the craft by looking outside of it. Sometime later I read “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey and I remember thinking it was one of the best explanations of Masonic principles that I had ever read.
