Is it right to change from af&am to f&am?

Not sure what you mean by "right" as both work towards the same ends. There may be slight differences in ritual, by laws and procedure, but for me the only difference is from which GL in England your Lodge traces its history.

And even the descent is no longer relative, as the later designations were arbitrarily chosen.

I went from an A&FM jurisdiction to an AF&AM jurisdiction. I noticed a few small differences in the ritual. But you get that from state to state.

What if it traces to a Scottish or Irish history? England wasn’t the only one forming lodges here.

UGLE is AF&AM, California is F&AM, New Mexico is AF&AM... I’m never sure which path I’m on.

I'm aware that not only English lodges were formed, but the 2 titles are specifically related to the 2 factions that merged to form the UGLE, therefore lodges formed before that simply kept their titles rather than change them.

It’s a nice theory but it doesn’t really hold water. Take Virginia, for instance, their territory had lodges from five different grand lodges... why did they decide to be AF&AM? Did they even use the initials at that period? Evidence doesn’t really back it. The first grand lodge in the US has no designation regarding “antient” or “modern,” nor, it seems, do any of the 18th-century grand lodges.
And realistically, there is only one grand lodge in this country that used the Antient ritual.

To me there is no right or wrong in Masonry, we have disagreements, we discuss it, we vote on it, problem solved. If a Brother wants to venture to another Jurisdiction, I’m pretty sure they will except him open arms. I’m satisfied on where I’m at....

Indeed, we in PA use the Antient Ritual but also use F&AM, with the word "Ancient" only used in the formal title of the Grand Lodge.
