Lodge Correspondence

Good evening brothers; I have a really good question I'm curious about if someone could point me in the right direction. I came across the UGLE website and saw that the MWPHGLGA was not recognized under by the UGLE but the GLOG was. After looking into it more I also saw that the MWPHGLGA was not recognized by the GLOG. (vice versa)

After asking a brother I was told this is only because the lodges are not in regular correspondence with each other. My question may be better answered by a brother from my lodge; but why aren't lodges in correspondence with each other today. Also, how do you start a correspondence with another lodge? I personally am interested in showing brotherly love to all worthy MM. I also want to someday be able to sit in a lodge with brothers outside of a PH lodge. Hope someone can give me insight.

When it says that "Lodges are not in regular correspondence with each other", it means two Grand Lodges don't officially recognize each other as being Masons. In order for them to recognize each other, one (usually the junior) must apply to the other for recognition. If the Grand Lodge being so petitioned determines that the petitioning Grand Lodge merits recognition, they will then grant it (sometimes a vote of members of that Grand Lodge is required). You will also learn that words such as "correspondence", "regular", & "recognize/recognition" have specific, non-usual meanings in the Masonic context. Hope this helps.

That definitely makes a whole lot of sense. I appreciate the insight.

My understanding is that the UGLE will recognise a state's Prince Hall GL when the other (historically recognised) GL does. Informally, the UGLE of course knows that these PHA lodges are regular in their workings and landmarks, but I suppose there's a desire not to step on toes or get in the middle of the local politics. Although the lion's share of historically recognised state GLs and their PHA counterparts are now in amity, there are a handful of holdouts and, unfortunately, the GLoG is one.

The presence of two regular, largely race-based GLs in each of the United States is an anomaly peculiar to the US (albeit with a little overspill into Canada) and rooted in its shameful history in that respect. Clearly, we all still have a ways to go, and I pray that we get there.

Till then, be sure that as a UGLE mason, I regard you as a Brother, Bro. Exxavier, and I look forward to the day when any questions of us sitting in lodge together will be a thing of the far past.

As a small note, UGLE has formally stated PHA is regular, but it is their practice to only recognize one GL in a jurisdiction absent agreement or treaty.

Sorry for the late response Brother William. Most importantly, I definitely appreciate your well typed response.

You literally answered my question perfectly. My desires as a young PHA Mason is to be able to sit in any lodge across GA, even across the world someday.

For me it’s quite intimidating to ask a brother this exact question; I myself don’t want to step on any toes. Thanks so much for the light and most importantly for respecting me as a brother!
