What’s the strangest place that you’ve met a brother Mason?

Intrigued to meet a taxi driver in Montreal who was a brother. He told me a little about his lodge and the Craft in Quebec. Also met a card dealer in Las Vegas who was a brother. And met an old Scotsman in San Francisco who had been master of his lodge and arranged a tour of the Grand Lodge building and museum when I was in town.

I don't travel much, but I had a great one when I greeted a client one day who was with a staff member. I greeted the staff member by name and I said "Hello Brother" to the client and the staff member said "Hello Brother" to me.. I actually did not think much of it, as often folk call each other bro and brother, but there was the odd usual masonic word slipped in as we spoke around this staff member in the usual "code" which would just slip by others, and the staff member said "Hey! I'm a Freemason too!" I never knew.. he was in a lodge I used to visit and we had mutual friends...

In the same vein, I had another client who sat me down and proceeded shower praise and say how honest I was, what a great job I had done with diligence etc etc and then he said "There is something you don't know about me, I am a Freemason, and I was wondering, (pause) .. would you be interested in becoming a Freemason?" It came a bit nervously out of him. I looked him in the eye and said "No, I don't think I am interested in joining Freemasonry"... in his eyes I could see him surprised and the thought "How do I back pedal out of this!" in his eye. And I cheekily smiled and said "That's because I am a Past Master". We both had quite a laugh :)

I am sure other brothers will have good stories about meeting Freemasons on their travels though, like you, I'd love to hear them :)

A week after being raised, I had the opportunity to go on a trip to Israel. I remember sitting in the back of a small tour van with a family from South Africa when the dad/husband noticed my S&C ring. Turns out he was a PM of a Lodge there. Very cool to be in the strangest places and find a Brother.

I am an American living in Germany. My neighbor ordered water from the local water company... the deliveryman and I kicked off a conversation; turns out he is the WM of the local German Lodge. We have been communicating every since... almost a year now.

Exiting an airplane in Oklahoma City. During the flight the person sitting next to me had asked me why I was going to Oklahoma and I replied that I was attending a Masonic conference in Guthrie. When I stood to exit the airplane the man in the seat in front of me shook my hand and said “enjoy your conference Brother”, and turned out clasped hands so that I could see his Masonic ring.

At work.
He was training us in how to maintain/take care of industrial
scrubbers.
I saw his ring but was never able to talk in private with him.

I have 2.

1) At a car dealer taking my SUV in for its first service. I pull into the service "Reception area" and I see a guy from inside the office come running out and cut off the Service Advisor in the reception area. He holds out his hand and says "Welcome Brother, let me help you!" He saw the S&C emblem on the back of my car as I pulled in and wanted to be sure he would be the one to assist me. Turns out he is JW at the Lodge located near that dealership. He did take care of me, He found a deal for a free oild change and I had my first service, oil & filter change, tire rotation, etc for $18.00. He gave me his card, I will certainly be sure to see him next time I have to go in.

2) On a boat carrying passengers from a cruise ship to a Private Island in the Bahamas. As I was walking towards the gangway to get onto the Island the Captain of the boat steps out of the Wheelhouse and says to me "Have a great day Brother-Mon!" I assume he saw my S&C ring as he showed me his. Then he said if we encounted any issues let him know.

Have met many Brothers "in the wild" but those 2 were the most suprising to me.

I doubt that this type of encounter could ever happen in Europe. Masons do not seem to wear any recognisable jewellery outside the lodge, or have a badge on their car over here.

I would be interested to hear from other European masons on this topic.

See my answer, Im a swedish mason and we use a few symbols a bit diffrent. The masonic ring I reference is used in the Swedish rite and is unique. It would be missed by most masons in general
