Allen Roberts' book, "House Undivided" is a good start in Civil War history; a follow-on "House Reunited" describes the Reconstruction period. Michael Halloran's "The Better Angels of Our Nature" is a good, more recent update. Bullock describes the effect of Masonry during the Revolution in "Revolutionary Brotherhood: Freemasonry and the Transformation of the American Social Order, 1730-1840". Chris Hodapp's "Solomon's Builders" is a good overview of Masonic effects in our national history. A favorite of mine has been Roberts' biography of Harry Truman, "Brother Truman".
A quick search on "Freemasonry + History" is a good start, though it's a good idea to figure out just what aspects of the history you're really interested in; there is a lot of stuff out there, and depending on those interests, you have to wade through a lot of chaff to find some wheat.
