Normally the incoming Grand Master checks with his contacts in each district for their recommendations, checks availability of persons recmended and then make his appointment. This is usually done in July or early august. Prior to GL meeting in Dec. They are usually informed in August of appointment. The appointment is not announced until GL communications Dec.

I heard RW Orvile O'Neal met and hand picked all his DDGM's. I know many were suprised by this fact but he wanted to keep the names under wraps for some reason.

It does not suprise me. I expect great things from the RW next year. He is a people person, very sharp and expects only the best from Masonary.

They keep it under wraps so the incoming DDGM isn't put in a position of having everyone run to him with problems ... ! Lets the present DDGM handle everything up to the Grand Lodge Meeting.. !

same here in Mass. three are usually asked in most cases by the out going DDGM, he then refers those three names to the GM's office, but not always does one of those three get picked by the GM. Here it is usually at the Feast of ST. John that the new DDGM are made mention, but usually by the end of Nov., early Dec. we find out through the grape vine. Also it may not always be the DDGM's home district that he may become
the DDGM of.

No dought...! those DDGM's have enough to deal with...! Our DDGM God bless him was worn to a nub this year...! As usual that is good wisdom and should probably be done in the future...?

The reason that the names must stay under wraps every year is because it would be a discourtesy to the present DDGM in the District. Each year when the new Deputies are trained during July, August, and September, they are instructed to remain silent until Grand Lodge, except that they usually let the present Deputy know, so that they can have an exchange of information that is pertinent to their district.

Are they all Past Masters? I have only met one thus far and he unfortunately was weak in lodge etiquette. I would think that anyone filling this position would have to be knowledeable in order to inspect a lodge and the officers.

The Grand Master to be makes the appointments around the first of the year, and you don't get to vote for them if that is what you are asking!
