Musical Introduction to Masonry

My story starts off with me as an 18 year old college freshman. I was a music education major and clarinet player. My initial interest in Masonry was peaked while I was sitting in studio class one Tuesday evening (all of the clarinet players studying under our lesson teacher had a class together once a week to play for each other and get feedback). Our lesson teacher had a strong belief that we should learn as much as we could about the composers of the music we were playing, to better understand their intentions with the music and the world they lived in. One of the other clarinet players was playing the Concerto K.622 by W.A. Mozart. After going through Mozart's birth and death dates, where he lived and who he married (the daughter of another composer of the time, C.M. von Weber), our teacher mentioned that Mozart was also a Freemason, but did not expand on the subject.

My curiosity was peaked. Later that week in my lesson with him, I asked if he was a Mason. He replied that he wasn't and we went on with the lesson. I began doing some research into Masonry, but nothing deep. As my college career went on, I held onto that interest in Masonry, even writing a research paper on Mozart and the music he composed for his lodge and The Magic Flute. As I neared the end of my time in college, I decided that I wanted to see what Masonry was about. I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. I never knew any Freemasons (at least not that I knew about), so I went to my local lodge and began speaking with the men there, eventually petitioning and being initiated on January 24, 2008.

Before I finished college, my grandmother was visiting us and I told her that I was interested in becoming a Freemason. She proudly stated that her father had been a Mason and that she and her sister were in possession of his Masonic jewelry. She wanted me to have it. Sadly, my grandmother did not live to see me follow in her father's footsteps, but while in Michigan for her funeral, her sister gave me my great-grandfather's Masonic cufflinks and ring, which I still wear proudly today as a Master Mason.

Wow! Touching story. I'm a music educator myself, so I found it particularly interesting. It's great that you have Masonic jewelry in your family. My grandfather was a Mason, and a jeweler, yet he never wore any Masonic Jewelry. That's a wonderful family heirloom for you to have!
