Fund Raiswers

It has been said and posted here many times that we are restricted to having only 2 raffles a year. I can find no record of this in the GL Law books. Can someone please post a source? With the loss of Endowment money this year we are looking for ways to make up the money. Thanks!

Disregard searching, I found the answer. Rather than deleting the post Ill post the answer for everyone else.

It is not a GL restriction but a Texas Law that only allows 2 raffles a year. To be specific CHAPTER 2002. CHARITABLE RAFFLES I hope that helps someone else looking for this information!

Are all fun raisers considered "raffles"? I am in the process of coming up with some type "contribution" to my Lodge since the endowment money will not be available.

No only raffles are raffles. Our lodge has a fundraiser at a local pizza place 2 or 3 times a year. we get a percentage of the sales on a set night. It's a great fundraiser, it cost us NOTHING and all we have to do is get people there to eat...and who doesn't like to eat! I know that Applebees does a Pancake Breakfast. Our local Lions club does it once a year..tickets are $7 (i think) All you have to do is provide servers and cleaners, Applebees will supply a cook and food and drinks...if you can get people there in the AM its a good thing.

and I believe (I may be wrong, wouldnt be the first time) that if it isnt a raffle offered to the public at large it doesnt count either. ie a 50/50 raffle at a meeting where you sell tickets and then draw a ticket and give the winner half the proceeds. that is a closed "raffle" that wouldnt effect the general public. we do those for the FMRC all the time to raise money to give to GL. In most cases (I think all but 1 in fact) the winner donated the money back.

i think you are right...we go to a monthly car show and they do a 50/50 pot. the car club is a 501(3c) organization that does charity work, but i know they do a 50/50 at least once a month

poker rally

I was thinking of suggesting a poker rally to my lodge. basically $5-$10 a head the winner gets a watch or some other prize. Texas hold em rules. have some food at the event.
