Brothers,
I am not in the military but my son, a newly raised MM is. He is coming to Fort Bliss later this month for AT. He asked me if Texas goes dark for the summer. I am hoping someone has that information as he is hoping to visit a lodge, etc while he's there. Thank you.

In most a its you can now have your vehicle and sometimes leave in the evening, if you have no other duties. At least in the share force.

He's not coming down for AIT but for his annual training. Either 3 or 4 weeks, he's not sure yet. He said 8 hour shifts, 7 days a week. The logistics of a lodge visit are his problem, I just thought I'd ask the question for him. Thanks, Brothers.

There are several lodges there in El Paso, with a couple of them right close to the base. I was out there (as a DA civilian) until some months ago, and got to visit a couple of the lodges. When I did visit the lodges there, it was during this time of the year, so unless they changed things for some reason (and I don't think they would have), they will still be having lodge.

However, depending where your son is going to be going out there he might or might not be able to go to lodge. Bliss is a big base with some HUGE "training areas" that they take reservists and guardsmen to to train. Some of the billeting and assignments are not even on the main post, but rather way out at those training areas. So, it will all depend on if he is going to be going to MaD BDE or one of the other units that trains soldiers for MOB, De-MOB, and annual training.

All in all, if he has the freedom to leave the main post then lodge should be going on out there. http://elpasomasons.net/ is a really good site that incorporates all of the Masonic organizations out there and has an area that you can see the different lodges, where they are, and when they hold meetings. If he needs a ride, there are taxis there and he can probably even make contact with one of the lodges and tell them that he is in town for training and would like to visit. I'm sure that there would be a fellow Brother that is currently serving as well and can pick him up and take him to the lodge. I met several Brothers while I was working there on base, and even the Brothers that I had the pleasure of meeting that were in the higher headquarters were very helpful guys about the fraternity.

I wish him luck, and please thank him for his service for me. And thank you for being the parent of a patriot.

If you can't locate anyone on here to help you out in more detail, check out this website if you didn't see it above:

http://elpasomasons.net/lodges.php

It lists all the lodges there in El Paso and when they meet, and even some contact information to them. There are a few different lodges that meet at the location on Magruder St. I visited one lodge there, and they told me that pretty much every night of the week there is something going on there. You will have to GPS the lodge addresses to find out which one is going to be closest to where you are staying or the base. Good luck, and have fun. Stay the heck away from Juarez, buddy!...lol

Thanks Mike. And my mission OIC already made it perfectly clear that mexico is off limits.

Lol, even if it wasn't off limits I would be going near there. If your going to go out for a night, find a place on the West side to go to. The East side has some fun bars, but it can be pretty shady there. Cincinatti Street has some pretty fun bars to go and it is where all the college students go and also a bunch of the joes, but also a bunch of the locals knuckleheads as well. If it weren't for these three groups, that would be the place to go. Downtown has some more "upscale" clubs that are pretty nice and you have less to worry about there. But, I would probably just go down and concentrate on training and if you get some free time check out the Scottish Rite Temple there and some of the other historical places of interest. Surprisingly, El Paso is a really beautiful place and has a lot of history and cool stuff to do. It's the people (a lot of joes included) that really ruin the place.
