I want to be a better Mason

I was raised a year ago and since then I have not been very active in Masonry. I have attended Lodge a few times, visited a Lodge with a friend and made time to go by my Lodge and make a donation at a recent fundraiser. There is no reason for this other than I have been busy. I am married, recently started a new job, and have 2 children. As a matter of fact, as I type this I am in a hospital room waiting for my wife to deliver our new baby. I constantly have on my mind that I want to be a better Mason. I fell like I am a good example and represent Masonry well. I live right, take pride in family, country and community. I do not.come from a "Masonic" family, meaning I didn't grow up around Masonry. It is something I became curious and passionate about in my late 20's. My wife has been very supportive in my journey and that has been great. However, when not at work I want to be with her and the kids and everything seems to find its way to the back burner.
That said, are there any suggestions from more experienced brothers that can give me some advice and guidance as to how I can take baby steps to being a better Mason.

Brother I commend you. I believe that you are living up to the obligation that you took! You have to take care of your family and work before you do anything else and now with a new baby (congrats on that as well) you need to focus on your family first!

Masonry will always be there for you and I'm sure the brothers at your lodge understand fully what you are going threw they have all been there too!

My suggestion would be try to make as many meeting as you can without neglecting your home duties and if you miss a few of them contact a brother from your lodge or your secretary and find out what you missed so you can keep up with the going ons in the lodge.

If you have any close friends in the lodge you attend maybe contact one of them and do coffee or dinner and just take some time to play catch up!

Hopefully this helps

I feel the same way. I was deployed with the Military a lot and was unable to attention lodge. I am also married with a 3 year old son and am a full time collage student. It's busy and I feel like I could be a better Mason. I am looking for a lodge nearby to start attending but I go to school at night. I know that everything happens for a reason and I'm positive that everything will work out.

First let me start by saying congrats on the new baby. Second, I have to agree with Bro. Lottman. You are living up to your obligation. I find myself sometimes feeling the same way. I work full time, go to school full time, and want to be around my family as much as possible. I was also in the military and so I missed a lot of time with them and I feel that I need to make up for that lost time. My Lodge has meetings 2 times a month. I try to make at least one of them but I am not able to do that many times. This, I feel, does not make me less of a Mason. We have priorities in life that we must attend to and then use what time is left to the best of our abiltites. I go to our monthly breakfasts that we have just so I stay in touch with everyone and see what is going on and catch up on anything I might have missed. When I am not doing anything at work or at night once the littel one is in bed I try to improve myself in Masonry by studying and reading on the history of Masonry, the symbology of the degrees, or something. I feel as long as I am actively making Masonry a part of my life whether I am at Lodge or not I doing what Masonry requires of me. Granted sometimes the study of Masonry takes a back seat to the study of Sociology or whatever college course I am taking at the time, but as long as I am actively doing something to improve myself for the betterment of myself in my family, community, or Lodge I am doing what Masonry is all about.

Thanks brothers. Honestly, Masonry is in my heart and deep, so I feel great but there is always room to improve.

Good advice.

Apply your working tools, read the Book of Proverbs. You'll be A-okay.

Just playing devils advocate, but: What is it you think you need to do to become a better mason? Or why do you think your not a good mason? When you can answer those your almost there...

Well I would in no way say that I am bad or not good enough. I do however, feel like I would like to he more active at the Lodge, mentor EA's and just get more into Masonry.

I guess in a nutshell, I don't want to become the guy that sends in dues once a year and that's all I do.

Being a 'good mason' doesn't mean you walk in the door every month to pay bills. By learning the lessons that Masonry teaches and exemplifying them in your daily life you are being a good Mason.
