Call for photography students

Fellas,

I've done a fair bit of photography over the years. Originally taught myself many moons ago over a whole lot of trial and error, started with film, transitioned to DSLR, then went back to school to learn it more deeply. Taught it at the local community college for a bit. You can see some of my older work here:

That material is dated now but you get an idea of my own personal directions.

A Brother of mine from this site recently got a DSLR and I'm going to be working with him to learn it. It occurs to me that it is just as easy to work with a group to learn this stuff as it is one. And better, really.

I intend to go through a lot of what you would learn in an introductory university course with him, if he can stand it. I figure it will make it a lot more fun for him through the years, and give me a nudge to get back involved with a passion of my own.

If you have a DSLR, and always wanted to know what all those fancy dials do, or how to improve your composition, or how to take cool landscapes, or ultra closeups of flowers, bugs, etc etc then I'm yer huckelberry and now would be a good time.

I figure if we get a group of us we can go through the basics, together, and then push into flash and whatnot. Do weekly little "projects" where we all go out and shoot a similar subject. Then we discuss our results, and get better that way.

Only thing required is a DSLR and some time. No fancy lenses needed, just the basic one that came with your DSLR.

We can delve into post processing and whatnot as well if the group has legs, or even organize some shoots together sometimes.

Mostly gauging interest, give a response if such a thing is up your alley.

S&F,
Michael

That would be awesome. I am in the market for a DSLR right now. I have dabbled in photography over the years and have always wanted to learn more. How long would the course take roughly? Of course I am currently in Oklahoma but I have a job opportunity that might land me in the Houston area.

I figure six months or so. All online and whatnot, but would be happy to do outings or meet with folks in person.

What would be fun I think is to go through a set of work together and then transition to being the heart of a long term photog group. Sort of like a writer's group. I'll set the material and whatnot for the first bit, then we can transition to it being a collective where we review each other's stuff, give honest critiques and that sort of thing. Maybe enter some photo contests and the like together, or even show together down the road. Open ended.

As soon as I get my camera I will hit you up. Like I said I have always loved photography and quite the collection of antique cameras, but nothing in the DSLR realm yet. Which is what I am working on to remedy. Eventually I would like to get into underwater photography but that is a long ways down the road. I would have to mortgage the house just buy a good housing.

Sounds very interesting! I have a canon rebel T1i and mainly just use the auto mode because I don't have a clue what all the functions do and love to take pics mostly of outdoors stuff!
