Recently I was in a discussion with a few of my brothers. It was stated that college Fraternities and Sororities originated and or evolved out of Masonry. Is this a fact or myth? :001_unsure:

Yes and no. Many of their forms, and rituals were based on masonry, but non have actually come from it in any way that I know of. One claimed for a while that they did but I believe were made to retract it.

Did all of them do so? No. Absolutely not.

Did some borrow from our symbolism? Yes. But during the fraternal boom of the 1800s, I wouldn't be surprised if we borrowed from other organizations ourselves.

My fraternity definitely has some Masonic elements to it. When I researched our founders, I discovered that one of them was a Past Master and Past Commander of masonic bodies in Michigan. In fact, he was a PM of the Lodge named after his dad. ;)
