Question. Does The Grand Lodge of Texas have any stand on lodges having assistant secretaries? This is truly an impossible job unless you are retired, independently wealthy, or just a-social.

Being neither retired nor wealthy, I guess I'm Door #3.

AFAIK, GLoT has no stand on this issue- it's just that there is no such office listed. I guess if a Lodge wants to have an assistant or 2 for their Secretary, it's their business- they just wouldn't be considered officers by GL. (& probably wouldn't have officially sanctioned access to the Secretary's Database).

As expected. The officially sanctioned access issue is a can of worms not many wise men are willing to tackle. Tough call.

Thanks for the unofficial, official viewpoint. For more reasons than one, you are now the patriarch of secretarial knowledge in SouthEast Texas.

Don't go anywhere or change your contact information.

I've been secretary for a little bit now, full time employed, average family size, and a lodge of 210 members. The 150 years of garbage and empty utility envelopes, piled in the secretaries office, made a very difficult barrier to entry to this Office. I have converted nearly every reoccurring document to MS Word/Excel etc., organized and purged the office setup processes and procedures, all with lengthy notes and how-to's. All in my dropbox account so i can access it anywhere. I've set a term limit for myself and will train an assistant as soon as one presents himself to assume the office after me, assuming he is accepted.

In short, I've discovered that, for myself, the job isn't difficult or even hard at all... But requires attention to detail, excellent organizational and task management skills.

The only time chaos rears its head is during the hour or so before stated opens. The members seem to think this is a good time to dump their tasks on the secretary. The solution I have found to this is to vacate the secretaries office that evening. Oddly I become invisible! Any 'real' business will be mentioned during stated.

tmcguire thanks for your input. It relieves me that another regular family man has found a way to maintain such a important duty. This coming year if accepted I will hold the office as Secretary in my Lodge. I am eager, excited and nervous all at the same time since I am newly raised. However I love the logistics side of the craft and want to learn more. I am 25 years old with 2 young Boys. I may very well be the youngest Secretary in my lodge history. If all works out it will be a great year.

Good plan!

The bylaws of my lodge provide for the appointment of an Assistant Secretary by the Secretary with approval of the Master. The duties of the Assistant Secretary are defined by The Secretary and Master.
