I use a myriad of options for gaining more light. Our older and more experienced Brethren, The Lodge's library, Books, the internutz, travel to different lodges,older issues of Texas Masons Magazine, etc.

Pick out something in the Lodge Room to focus your attention on. That way it will help seem like its just another get together with your instructor. I used to do that during Army promotion boards and found that it worked well during my proficiencies too. Good luck!
At our Lodge, we do them at either a stated or a called meeting so that the EA or FC can get it done as soon as he is ready. I have seem as many as 3 Brethren turning in their proficiencies at the same time. However, when we do have multiples being done, they all must recite the Obligation...
