On Wednesday, August 9th, Alamo Lodge No. 44 hosted a Cornerstone Leveling at The E.L.Turbon Student Center on St. Philips College. It involved opening a MM lodge and a Representation of the Grand Lodge of Texas at Alamo Lodge's home lodgeroom, the ceremony, and then closing the two open-lodges. The M:W: Grand Master, Jerry N. Kirby. presided over the Representation of the Grand Lodge of Texas and the Cornerstone Leveling. With Many Thanks to Bro. Arturo Loera, here are several pictures from the event. Thank you to the brethren of Alamo Lodge and the brethren of at least eight different lodges that attended, thank you to Bro. Loera for the pictures, and thank you to the Alzafar Shrine for sending the van used to transport the Grand Master and his party to and from St. Philips College! A great day for Freemasonry in San Antonio!

The ceremony to "Level a Cornerstone" is a Masonic ceremony that represents the leveling of the cornerstone of a a building (usually) in the Northeast corner. A lodge works with an organization that is engaged in building a new building, or adding on to an old one, or in the case of our April ceremony, remodeling and re-purposing a building, and they arrange to place the cornerstone. If the organization desires the cornerstone, the lodge organizes the acquisition of the stone and the Grand Lodge participation in the ceremony. On the day of the ceremony, The Grand Master or his designated representative along with other Grand Lodge officers (or reps) perform a masonic cornerstone ritual that involves symbolically checking its square, its level, and its plumb and anointing it. In the case of the one here on August 9th, we had the Grand Master himself and the Grand Chaplain, and two DDGM's and other designated Grand Lodge representatives, along with students, faculty, and administrators from St. Philips College, several city officials, and an audience that included about 100 local Freemasons from many of our local lodges.

Might be referred to by slightly different names in different jurisdictions. In the Texas Monitor it is referred to as Leveling a Cornerstone. It's a nice ceremony if you get a chance to attend one, I recommend it highly!
