Is not Canada Day the equivilent of our 4th of July? Canada's independence from the Crown?

Actually it is not as the crown is still the official head of state in Canada. Canada Day is the celebration of when Canada became a country unto herself separate from England. The crown signs all bills into law as passed by our elected parliament and it is parliament that runs the country. The crowns powers are mostly token.

Canada day is founded on a piece of British legislation known as the British North American Act, which allowed Canada to form into confederation and became the Dominion of Canada. And yes the queen is the sovereign head of state. She is known as the queen of Canada and is represented here, by her Governor General. Her function is mainly ceremonial, but still has powers to close
Parliament and appoint ministers is the current government is defunct.

A belated congratulations to our most honorable brethren to our north.

God save the Maple Leaf flag and all who honor it.

I've always felt welcome when in Canada. The people are warm at heart, hardy, and friendly.

May you prosper and never know the confines of "the penalty box."

    God speed.

Thank you brethren for the kind words. And I hope your Independence Day was just as enjoyable. But of course there is always someone who has to ruin the fun for everyone.
