Freemasonry is neither secret nor occultism. Christians, Jews and Muslims are not forbidden from joining unless they live in a despotic country. God is referred to as a Supreme Being because a Lodge may be made up of many faiths. By calling God the Supreme Being, everyone understands that God is of their faith.

To become a Freemason in Nigeria kindly locate a lodge or lodge member close to you or write to the District Grant Lodge of Nigeria through:

    District Grand Master
    Chief Moses O. Taiga

    District Grand Secretary
    Patrick (Femi) O. Oroyemi

    Address
    St George’s Hall
    28 Broad Street

    Hello Brother

As you can see, we do get a lot of questions about men becoming Freemasons in Africa. I know little about the state of Freemasonry in Nigeria - can you tell us something of it ?

While I’m appreciative of the input from a Nigerian source, your description of countries such as Sweden, where the fraternity requires one to profess Christianity, as despotic, is not well taken. There are also grand lodges which are monotheistic, require belief in resurrection, and/or belief in the immortality of the soul.

To be honest you can join freemasonry in Sweden even as a jew or a muslim since the Grand lodge of Finland started lodges here.

I was thinking that Swedes have Finnish freemasonry for Finnish speaking Swedes and we have Swedish Freemasonry for Swedish speaking Finns. But this is a good reason too. I guess even the GLOF lodges in Sweden speak Swedish?

I read the original sentence to mean that there was no hindrance to men of any religion, unless they live in a country that had despotic leaders/government. I don't think I've ever heard a private organisation referred to as "despotic"; not many would be in a position to fit the definition of the word accurately.

I read the post as referring to countries as well. That is why I replied “your description of countries such as Sweden, where the fraternity requires one to profess Christianity, as despotic, is not well taken. ”.

Still not following you. Surely the country of Sweden doesn't require Freemasonry to be Christian? Or am I wrong? I wouldn't have thought they cared. I assumed the OP was referring to countries like, say, Saudi Arabia, where Freemasonry is banned (and certainly for Muslims) rather than a place where the GL itself, of its own volition, has greater restrictions than most. I'm just wondering if you're finding offence where none was offered ... ??

The GL of Sweden uses the Swedish rite wich is a ten degree masonic rite wich has a christian requirment.
Its a bit special as the whole rite start at EA (I°) and after MM then automaticly (unless you specificly say so) you go through higher degrees, culminating in (reported) fully christian degrees.
All degrees of the rite are connected.

We have lodges under the GL of Finland wich dont care wich religion you have.
