Masonic connection (continued)

Another interesting question which I can't seem to find an answer to (Grand Chapter of VA is totally opaque): our incoming Worthy Matron was able to join through a connection to her uncle (a Master Mason). Now her mother wishes to join, but being on the maternal side of the family does not have that connection, either by blood or marriage,but surely as the mother of an OES member (and sitting WM!) that would be sufficient to qualify her?

Surely the OES membership requirements are spelled put in the Code for your GL. What does it say? If not there then they have to be stipulated somewhere.

It's not entirely clear, but it would appear to preclude the mother of an existing OES member. Unfortunately there is From the Grand Chapter web site
Who may join: Only men who are Master Masons are eligible and only women with specific Masonic relatives may be members.
Affiliated Master Masons in good standing and any female relatives
who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption to Affiliated Master
Masons in good standing, or if deceased were in good standing at the
time of death; as well as members–either active for three (3) years or
majority–in the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls or in Job’s
Daughters International, each of whom having attained to at least the
age of eighteen (18) years, are eligible to membership in the Order of
the Eastern Star.

So that's set at the national level. Be a shame to preclude a potential relative because of wording.

How about this ? (Disclaminer - I am not OES: and I never read a ritual from something I might join).

Men don't need to know Freemasons to become a Freemason in most places now.
So, why wouldnt the OES follow suit ? Seek references, a clear police check and let any woman join...... or at least one "demonstrating a connenction to Freemasonry or the OES" - without defining "connection".. would give flexibility.

Well, I emailed Grand Chapter and received a nice, prompt reply (GLOVA take note!) asking me to call them. I handed it off to my wife who is a chapter officer and a close friend of the incoming WM, and the upshot of the conversation was that they (GC) would consider this a case of a connection established through marriage so go ahead and get her petition in!

Well to my humble opinion the children and eventual grandchildren should also be allowed to join. Pity that this impossible in my Lodge.
