Cub Scout leader Michael T. Tedder, a member of Palestine Masonic Lodge No. 31, A.F. & A.M, received the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award during a special ceremony on Jan. 16.

“Tedder has displayed outstanding dedication to the Scouting program, carrying on the tradition of Brother Dan Beard and exemplifying the ideals of Freemasonry,†a Palestine Masonic Lodge No. 31, A.F. & A.M news release said.

Although Tedder has been registered in Scouting for only a little more than three years, his overall impact on the program, both in his unit and in his district have been outstanding. For three years, Tedder has been the Webelos leader of Pack No. 705, and as a direct result of his leadership and example the Pack’s Webelos program has graduated 100 percent with the Arrow of Light. This singular achievement has resulted in his recent elevation to the position of Cubmaster. It is worthy of note, and confirmation of his generous devotion, that he continues to offer his leadership in these roles.

Tedder’s service to the Three Rivers District of the East Texas Area Council includes serving on the staff of the district day camp and the district Mom and Me event for the past three years, and he has committed to continuing this summer and fall. Additionally he constructed the course for the Rain Gutter Regatta and has run the district event for the past two years.

“Without the willingness of people like Brother Michael to serve, these programs which are designed to build character in youth and help families grow in strength would not occur. Because of the exceptional commitment and special talents of Brother Michael these events not only occurred, but in each case they exceeded expectations in creating a positive program for out Scouts and their families,†the news release said. “The Scout Law and Masonic virtues are evident in Brother Michael’s daily living and serve as a guide and inspiration to both the youth he serves and the adults who observe him.â€

The award consist of a Masonic medallion suspended from a blue and silver neck ribbon, which can be worn at any Masonic or Scout gathering, a certificate, and a traditional Scouting knot patch authorized by the Boy Scouts of America as the “Community Organization Award,†to be worn by Scouter above the left shirt pocket of the uniform.

This is the first year that the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scout Award has been given recognition in Texas by the Grand Lodge of Texas.

History of the Award

Freemasonry is based on service, and the exemplification of moral truth, which is essential for good role models. The Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America, created the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouter Award as a national award program for Masons who exemplify the Scout Law and Masonic virtues, in service to the Scouting Program.

In the late 1800’s, Daniel Carter Beard created a program called the “Boy Pioneers†that inspired Lord Robert Baden-Powell to create the Boy Scouts in England. The Boy Scout program came to the United States in 1910 when Dan Beard merged his organization into the Boy Scouts of America and became its first National Commissioner. A Master Mason in New York, Beard stands as an example of how a Mason can live a life of Masonic Service to mankind, by reaching out and working with youth in the local community.
