My College will be meeting the last day of this month and we will be inducting new members. I have been assigned a role in the ritual and have been studying. I have gotten it down pretty well and am very much looking forward to performing it. Wish me luck!

Good luck. What part are you doing? I do the Chancellor's part in the Knight of York.

The Lord Preceptor of York University. It's just a small part but it's a start. I am looking forward to it.

That's fantastic. I confer the 2nd section and give the lecture.

Just got the word this morning that the ritual has been postponed, probably until the meeting of Oct. 30th. Oh well. I have my part memorized and am ready to go whenever.

Well, did my part last night and everything went well. Inducted 6 new members! A good night indeed.

Being UK based I have no idea how you colonials work your degrees ;)

But I am intrigued how you seem to speed through your degree structure so quickly!

Is there a dummies explanation that can help me understand?

    Thanks fellas

Well....the only thing that I can say is that in the Blue Lodge you have to memorize a certain amount of information and be able to intelligently explain the meaning of said information before being passed through each degree. In areas where nothing needs memorized, such as The York Rite Sovereign College of North America, to be proposed for membership depends on dedication to the York Rite, participation in same and other intangibles.

Hmmm, we obviously learn the catchesism responses to go through the second and third degrees in the craft. I've then done Mark. So that's been 2 years to do four degrees. Chapter will wait for 6-12 months whilst I learn more about Craft and Mark and start to do ritual - so far I've just done the working tools in lodge.

So you can see why I'm amazed at the rapidity of your progress!

    What about progression then?

I've been told it will be 7 to 10 years to go into the WM position in my craft lodge depending on the enthusiasm of those in front of me to go onto the ladder

I made MM after installation so at the next installation I might be able to start as IG after almost 3 years since initiation (to provide some context, I know it's not a race!) So with one year in each of the 5 regular positions (IG, 2 deacons, 2 wardens) that fits with what I have been told to expect.

    Cheers

    John

It varies from lodge to lodge in the US. Some lodges may have a number of willing members for the chairs, some need all hands on deck to fill those places. I believe Warrior on here went from Raising to the upper chairs in a matter of minutes! (Being facetious, but it was rapid.)

I started as Junior Steward in my mother lodge and Senior Deacon in another lodge. As Brother JC says, it varies.

True. I started in the Senior Deacon chair so that I had a lot to learn in a short period of time.
