Don't let a low-but-consistent turn out discourage you. If you have 40 people at the typical stated meeting, but you only have 5-10 show up for your study group, don't look at it in terms of who is too busy to attend or doesn't particularly find value in it. There are 4-9 others aside from...
I think it's all going to be in how it's presented or brought up. When I propose this, I'll mention Masonic education, but I'm also going to use other words to be more specific. I'm not really talking about practicing floorwork. That doesn't mean that we won't explore a degree, though...
I spoke to the WM ahead of time about this; it would be improper not to. Originally, I was hoping to do it while in lodge. He suggested that we start out doing it after lodge so that those that didn't wish to participate (your eye-rollers) could opt out. I think that's a good idea, but I hope...
It's a hard thing to do. A lot of lodges don't really have the time built in. One of the lodges I visit has its stated meeting each month on a Monday night beginning at 2000. It's a very popular lodge in the area. Because of that, there are always petitions to be read, Brothers turning in...
I hope I'm following you here.
This is a subject that comes up over and over again -- no matter how many times it's addressed. If membership is perceived as a problem -- if everyone is actually concerned with overall numbers -- in my opinion, this needs to be tackled at the lowest level...
All of the reasons you have listed are reasons why I've seen that happen (and then some). Some times, it's all past masters. Or if a lodge is conferring a degree as a courtesy, maybe one of the chairs is filled by a member of the other lodge. There's a plethora of reasons as to why it may...
I'm slowly working my way through this, but regarding the EA portion (the first quiz set), question #11, I don't see a correct answer. I cross-checked the answer against the EA illustrated lecture, too. I'm in Georgia, but I wouldn't think that matters.
My grandfather was a trucker when he was initiated. He said that his schedule made it difficult to work with an instructor/mentor regularly at first. Eventually, he started driving with another co-worker cross-country who happened to be a brother, and through all that one-on-one time, he...
I know the whole "Knights of the North" paper is a little bit taboo, but I agreed with more of it than I disagreed. I felt that it addressed several points that you all are discussing very well.
When I speak about Masonry, I don't have the wide breadth of knowledge or experience that a lot of...
I have updated the thread, and I sent an email to the Grand Lodge of Wyoming asking if the "pack mule" lodge was still something that was done.
As always, if anyone else has anything to add or share, just let me know!
UPDATE: According to the Grand Secretary, it is unknown if this is still...
If these aren't performed at regular or semi-regular intervals, I'll remove them from the list. Maybe I'll make a "dormant" section.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this list even anything that others would want to see populated and kept up with?
Congratulations. I had to move away from Keller Lodge a year-and-a-half ago due to work (I'm in Georgia now). Everyone's right in that it is a very good lodge. Hopefully, I'll be able to stop in for a visit next time I'm in DFW.
I've been having a lot of fun with this game so far. I got to New York not too long ago, but I've been so busy doing all of the side stuff that I haven't advanced the story there yet.
I just finished A Pilgrim's Path: Freemasonry and the Religious Right by John Robinson. It was very informative and helped give clear counter-points to all the tired reasons that people use to vilify Masonry.
I'm also at the beginning of the second part of Ayn Rand's We the Living. I don't...
Thanks for the responses. I've reorganized the original post to reflect what you all have posted. I wasn't really sure how to approach the Yellow Dog or the Order of the Turtle stuff, so I've left it off (for now, at least). If anyone else has any recommendations, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
Charles,
Those all sound really interesting. The pack mule lodge sounds particularly interesting. Do they always limit the number of people that attend, or were the numbers 27 and 28 arbitrary? The Bowling Green lodge sounds really neat, too. For all three of your examples, do you have...
Brethren,
I have a question to ask. I have been compiling a list of interesting or relatively unique Masonic events around the country (or even the world, for that matter) that I would like to attend some day. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help my list grow a bit more. A lot of...
Bryan, if I understand correctly,he's saying that he would like someone in the scientific community to go back and re-examine. Nothing more. He doesn't need to prove anything; he isn't really making any extraordinary claims. If someone were to go back and look at this again (I'm sure they...
