Ah, Bourbon!

Ah, Bourbon!
Bane of my father, boon of his sire!
What can I say to thee?
Thou art my friend,
My inspiration,
Native brother, not borne 'cross the sea.

Ah, Bourbon!
Missive to my muse, so far from reason,
How do I sing your praise?
Thou art my comrade,
My boon companion,
Soothing pains of the hardest days.

Ah, Bourbon!
Giving me poesy, taking my prose,
What is the key to thy mystery?
Thou bringst me insight
Clouded in revelry,
Merging cold science, hot history.

Ah, Bourbon!
Thou openest mine mouth and stop tight mine reserve,
How do I hold thee at arms length?
Though givest me freedom
To speak my true heart,
And give my tongue its fullest strength!

[Yes, this is written in the full throes of generous lashings of pure bourbon, no water, no mixers, no ice. My fencing master taught me that a gentleman should be able to handle a sword, make love to his woman, and compose verse while under the influence. Why have I indulged? Because I have not in quite some time.]
