Confused about the Past Masters Symbol

I have noticed looking at rings, aprons, etc...that some Past Masters symbols have the Square above the "rocking chair" and some have it omitted. Does that have anything to do with the difference in A.F & A.M. and F. & A.M.? If that is not the difference does anyone know what it is? Which one do we use in Texas?
