My Dear Texas Brothers:
Recently a topic has arisen among a few of us Massachusetts Freemasons as to whom is the first University or College Lodge here in the United States. Now the wording can be confusing here. I am looking for information for a College Lodge or University Lodge that may be tied to the University of Texas. One of our brothers has given me a date of 1918-1919 when it was constituted, but I find no such date. I do find a Lodge #1190 being chatered in 1922. I also find a reference to a Masonic Study Club being associated with the University going back to 1914.
Now just for the record, as far as I know, according to Masonic history, Richard C Maclaurin Lodge of Cambridge Massachusetts is the first COLLEGE Lodge, having its membership derived soley from either students. members, instructing staff or officers of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "The Harvard" lodge also of Cambridge is known as the first academic University Lodge in the United States being founded in 1922.
Does anyone have any information of a College Lodge or University Lodge being formed in Austin as part of the University of Texas, or any other lodge in Texas as a University Lodge prior to 1920? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
