There are many laudable paths towards self improvement. Going through a sequence that emulates a compressed career from go-fer to CEO of a small company is one laudable path towards self improvement.
Indeed, ONE. Leadership of any enterprise, particularly one comprised of volunteers, requires a special skill set not everyone possesses. To me, one of the beauties of Masonry is that there is a way for everyone to contribute to the Lodge- from sitting in the East to keeping the bathrooms clean & the lawn mowed. Each is, in its own way, essential to the operation of the Lodge. Sometimes we have to explain to a Brother who aspires to the East that he just doesn't have the ability to hold that position but that doesn't make him any less of a Mason or less important to the success of the Lodge.

Coming back to this, there is a saying here which comes to mind "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians" (hope that's not offensive to my American Brethren).... It is so true. Going East is very good, but just as important is not trying to run the lodge when you're not its leader - esp when you are a PM...

Shotly after being raised, I was temporarily seated to the right in the East by our then WM.. After elections, our WM became PM and took over that position and I was elected SD, where I currently hold that position.. We had/have a very small lodge, only 10-12 members currently. I finally got to put part of my duties into use when we raised 2 brothers!!! I think I was more nervous than they were!!!!:):)o_O:cool::cool:

My experience in the chairs is very similar as I am also from a small lodge with 78 total membership. I started out in the SD chair and am currently JW. Was raised in Aug. of 14.

78 members would be regarded as a large lodge here. Anything with more than 40 is considered a large lodge... many only have 20-30 members

My mother lodge of which I am an officer has the 78 members. A second lodge that I am a plural member of has more than 700 members. Of course, only a fraction of those are active.

My mind boggles. May I ask, what are the annual dues in that second lodge ?
$56.00 annually. Where their main money comes from is a fish fry on Saturdays 9 months a year. This is VERY successful. The place is always packed. They make thousands each day. They own their building and have a large, modern kitchen and a large dining room.
