Cleveland chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star turns 100

Cleveland’s Chapter 465 of the Order of the Eastern Star (OES) is holding an open house to celebrate their 100th Anniversary on Sunday, September 13.
The event will last from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m; lunch will be served at 2 p.m.
The event will held at theMasonic Lodge, located at 1209 Southline St.
The celebration is hosted by the organization’s Worthy Matron, Janneth Wright, Worthy Patron, Jeffrey Wright, and the officers and members.
The event will also feature an appearance from Bess Caldwell, the Worthy Grand Matron of Texas, and friends and members from across the state.
According to a statement from the OES the Tarkington Prairie Lodge first moved to Cleveland in 1905.
They then joined with the First Baptist Church and constructed a two-story wood frame building at 109 N. Washington, where Moore Furniture is presently located.
At that time the church held services downstairs while the lodge held meetings upstairs.
In 1909 Tarkington Prairie Lodge voted to allow a chapter of the OES to organize in their lodge.
On April 9, 1909 Cleveland Chapter 465 was instituted.
Six months later, on October 13, 1909, Chapter 465 was constituted.
A statement from Chapter 465 described the next few years as a “harmonious arrangement” with the First Baptist Church, the Tarkington Prairie Lodge and the Cleveland Chapter all cohabitating.
However, that was not to last. A storm damaged the building which forced all three organizations to find new housing.
In 1917 the Tarkington Prairie Lodge constructed a two story brick building, whcih still stands, at the corner of Houston and College.
In 1975 the Tarkington Prairie Lodge and Cleveland Chapter 465 broke ground on the building that would house the organizations for the next 34 years at 1209 Southline.
